A downloadable game

TO PLAY THIS GAME YOU NEED REAL HARDWARE OR THE COCO / DRAGON EMULATOR XROAR

Bob, a curious little hedgehog has just stumbled upon a small moonlit glade. Within it he's found some of the most delicious little glowing alien bugs that he has ever tasted. Help Bob eat his fill of these "out of this world" treats. But take care to avoid the sweeping teleport beams and be careful not to let those bugs stay red for too long......

Bob and the alien fire flies is the first game that I ever made originally in bAtari basic for the Atari 2600 and now available in 6809 assembly language for the Colour computer 1, 2 and 3 and also the Dragon 32 and 64.

The inspiration for the game's main character "Bob" came from a pancake I made once (it looked like a hedgehog with tentacles).  The game features 3 different game over animations and two hedgehogs. Yes, that's right, you can play alone as Bob or play in two player mode with a friend and control both Bob and Hog as they battle to be the first to eat 16 fire flies.

I've made a zip file that you can download below containing the source code for both versions of the game as well as a Coco dsk image and Dragon cas and wav files that can be used on real hardware or in a emulator such as XROAR.

Download

Download
Colour Computer disk image 157 kB
Download
Colour Computer cassette image 16 kB
Download
Dragon 32 / 64 cassette image 16 kB
Download
All files for both versions and source code 115 kB

Install instructions

This game will work on a real Coco or Dragon if you have a way to transfer the files across to it. You can use a CocoSDC or drivewire to transfer the disk image to a real Coco if these are available to you. If not (or if you have a  Dragon) cas and wav files have been included for both versions to let you load the game using a device such as the Maxduino cassette emulator which will let you transfer the cas file straight to the computer's cassette port. Also you'll find the wav versions in the BATAFF.zip

To play on a modern PC you will need to have the XROAR emulator installed on your computer. You can download the latest version for your system herehttps://www.6809.org.uk/xroar/

To launch the Colour computer version select any Tandy CoCo type in the hardware/machine menu and mount BobCoco.dsk in drive 0. Now type LOADM"COCOBOB and press enter, when loading is complete type EXEC to launch the game.

To launch the Dragon version select Dragon 32 or 64 in the hardware/machine menu and mount DRABOB12.cas in tape control. Then type CLOADM and press enter, when loading is finished type EXEC to launch the game.

Thanks for downloading and have fun ;)

Thanks Sabhead and sorry for the much too late reply, it means a lot to me that people find the game fun to play and addictive. But be careful, feedback like this may just lead to a "BOB2". Do you really want more frustration from your Coco? Take care and thanks again ;)

A fun, at times a bit frustrating due to my hand to eye coordination not being what it once was, game. Simple, addictive, and fast to play.

Kudos.

(1 edit)

This is a fun game that has that quality which makes one want to play "just one more round."  Well done!

Sorry about the really late reply. If "Bob" manages to pull the player back for another go I must have managed (despite myself) to do something right. Thank you for taking the time to play and leave a comment... You know I still give Ghost Rush a whirl from time to time, now that's a game that pulls the player back for another go, then another and another... :)

OOOhhhh - sorry for the multiple posts, but I'm still playing!!

One more suggestion - track the high scores.

Hey thanks for all the feedback, I'm delighted that you're enjoying it. I may well add a button press to skip the between level screens along with one or two improvements in a future version. I insisted on the key press thing to showcase the fact that it was being played on a real Computer (with a keyboard) and not a console. But, you're not the first to suggest that JS would be better. High scores are tracked (Well, the highest score is tracked) on the main screen after a game has been played. I made it this way because I'm lazy, and making a high score list seamed like a heck of a lot of work to me at the time, so maybe in my next game. Thanks again for taking time to give it a shot and I hope that it put a little COLOUR into your day, :)

Peter:  I just spent some time playing this on real hardware Coco3.  What a blast!  Great job on your first endeavor into game creation!  It definitely has the "JUST ONE MORE" vibe to it.

Two player version is very fun as well - slightly different game as the single player but even more fun.

One very minor suggestion - instead of having to hit Y to start next game, joystick button should to the same.  That will save me 1 second per game!   ;-)

I'll cast a vote for using the joystick button to start next game.

You spelled Color wrong....  ;-/
